Jan Karon in Atlanta

Last Thursday night Jan Karon was in Atlanta, speaking about her newest book, In the Company of Others. Many of you are probably familiar with her “Mitford Series”. I was so excited that she was coming on tour in my area.  Ms. Karon is so warm and charming in person! She spoke of how she had given up her successful career in advertising and moved to the mountains of North Carolina and began writing. Thank goodness she did! These books have had a huge impact on my life! If you have never read them I encourage you to do so. I have found so much comfort in them through the years. They would make a wonderful gift for any readers on your Christmas list.

Ms. Karon is a lovely person, after her talk she had a reception line to meet everyone! She doesn’t pose for pictures (that’s why my photos aren’t that great) or sign books (she has problems with her hands). She greeted each person as if they were a dear  friend. She really loves her fans and has the most warm and caring manner. If you want to learn more about her you can go to her website here.

What I’m Reading:Susan Branch

Don’t you just love Susan Branch? I ordered her Autumn book and I am enjoying it so much. It is filled with her wonderful art, handwritten recipes and sweet quotes and sayings.

There is a great article about Susan on the Country Living website. There are photos of her entertaining at her home in Martha’s Vineyard.

This is a photo of Susan working on one of her first books.

You can also visit her website. She sells some of  her books and calendars there and there is also an archive of old newsletters that I really enjoyed reading.  I hope you get a chance to visit. She really has a unique talent and you will find she is very inspiring.

I’ll be joining Seasonal Saturday today, so be sure to drop by and see all the inspiring ideas!

Little House on the Prairie

Did you grow up reading the Little House on the Prairie books?

I found this set of Little House books on ebay. This is what the series looked liked at the time when I read them and they were in excellent condition, so I couldn’t resist. They look like the have never been opened, much less read. I loved these books so much as a little girl.

Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote her first book in 1932.

Here is a picture of what the cover looked like:

There are twelve books, the last three were unedited and published posthumously.

Here is a picture of the real Ingalls family:

I remember when the t.v. series came on in 1974. If you were gonna watch this show you had to keep the Kleenex near by- I think every episode ended with a tearjerker. I remember the one where Ma and Pa’s new baby died and Laura ran away because she thought it was her fault. Traumatizing! That Michael Landon could make you cry like no one else.

There is a musical of Little House playing now with Melissa Gilbert playing the part of Ma.
